Well, the actual purpose of it all is to simply chat to the developers of the project, give them a way to answer questions while getting some background info out there as well as, in some cases, them showing some unseen images and video.

The event starts tomorrow, Thursday the 20th, at 7pm here in England and last for an estimated three hours where nine games and the teams behind those games will get their time. The nine projects confirmed are:

7:00PM – Unrest - An unconventional RPG set in ancient India.

7:20PM – Frozen State – A Survival Horror RPG

7:40PM – GhostControl Inc. – Ghost Hunting business Sim with tactical combat

8:40PM – Days of Dawn – Turn based RPG with a unique magic system

9:00PM – Frontiers – An Exploration based WRPG

9:20PM – Soul Saga – A JRPG inspired by the older classics of the genre

9:40PM – H-Hour – Spritual Successor to the SOCOM games

I’ve already backed three of these games: GhostControl Inc., Unrest and Frontiers. I’m most certainly interested in Soul Saga and Frozen State as well, going by the initial kickstarter pitch. I’ll be keeping my eyes on the live streams to pretty much make the decision for me.

Play music. Well I’ve always had a bit of interest in attempting to play music but the closest I’ve ever come to that is Guitar Hero and, well, I’m not quite playing it there am I? I’m just smooshing some colours alongside the music when the game tells me to. Infact, no game has really allowed you to alter the music or direct it in any shape or form. Beatbuddy has lofty ambitions of allowing this to happen.

Oh sure, it’s all going to be based around an original piece but with this it’s how you interact with the visualised parts. For example, the crab-thing represents the hi-hat, if you hit the crab it goes into its shell and the hi-hat stops until it comes back out. Check out the teaser trailer for an example you can actually see.

I love the design of the small blue blob thing. I’m guessing he’s the actual Beatbuddy. My excellent deductive powers used well there, I should be the next Sherlock Holmes.

Not only that, the screenshots that can be found show an all around excellent visual design with an insane amount of detail. Here are eight screenshots that can show you the exquisite detail featured.

Happily I’ll be playing Beatbuddy at Rezzed when I go this weekend and I’m looking forward to it. A Action-Platformer-Musical sounds interesting enough to grab my attention, and grab it has.

Infact, a game did actually allow you to direct the tune a little. That was Chime. Why do I bring it up now? Because Beatbuddy has some of the artists behind Chime involved as well.

Beatbuddy is by a curiously named team called Threaks and it is said to have original music by the likes of Austin Wintory (Journey), Parov Stelar and Sabrepulse (Chime) and a story by Rhianna Pratchett who has been involved in games like Tomb Raider, Mirrors Edge, Heavenly Sword and Overlord to name a few. With a star lineup, excellent visual design and what looks like a completely new experience, this is one to keep your eye on. It’s been in development now for over four years and it’s hoping to be released this year for the PC, Mac and Linux over Steam, with a possible development on Console after.

It was actually a while ago I got the acceptance for a press pass to Rezzed so it’s very late in me mentioning it here. What can I say, with my day job, writing about games across the net and then a bit of side work on games I haven’t really let it pass my mind to actually post about it before going. Well, here I go.

Yeah, I’m going to Rezzed. Rezzed is a games show based completely around indie and PC games, so it’s right up my alley. I’m excited about it! I’m actually going as one of these journylists. But moreso, I’m excited because of the lineup.

First things first are the list of games. The list of playable games includes such as Rome II:Total War, Wildstar and Splinter Cell: Blacklist to name just three of many. But I’d be remiss in mentioning the awesome indie games there. Redshirt, Project Zomboid (which I play regularly anyway) and Sir, You are being hunter (which I backed on the starter of kicks).

But not only that, for anybody interested in actually learning something, as I am, there are a range of sessions. Here’s the list:

Saturday 22nd June
12pm – Panel: How can new business models improve PC gaming? (John Walker hosts Mark Morris, Chris Delay, Paul Taylor, Chris Avellone and Ragnar Tornquist)
1pm – Prison Architect (Introversion’s Chris Delay and Mark Morris)
2pm – A look back at Frozen Synapse and a look forward to Frozen Endzone (Mode 7′s Paul Taylor and Ian Hardingham)
3pm – Dreamfall Chapters (Red Thread Games’ Ragnar Tornquist, Martin Bruusgaard and Dag Scheve)
4pm – Project Eternity (Obsidian Entertainment’s Chris Avellone)
5pm – Sir, You Are Being Hunted (Big Robot’s Tom Betts)

Sunday 23rd June
12pm – Panel: Is storytelling in games getting any better? (John Walker hosts Dean Hall, Chris Avellone, Ragnar Tornquist, Ed Stern and Will Porter)
1pm – Hotline Miami 2 vs. Luftrausers (Dennaton’s Dennis Wedin and Vlambeer’s Rami Ismail)
2pm – Total War: ROME II (The Creative Assembly)
3pm – WildStar (Carbine Studios)
4pm – The Creative Assembly Game Jam (Five teams present games made in a day to an expert panel made up of Chris Avellone, Ed Stern and Keith Stuart)
5pm – DayZ Standalone (Bohemia Interactive’s Dean Hall)

Again, all of this is at Rezzed. Which is this coming saturday and sunday, starting at 10am to 6pm both days at Birmingham NEC. I’ll be there both days as well, possibly malnourished from all the movement I’ll be doing with no food and only a hip-flask of scotch. I mean water.

You may remember from a week ago that I reviewed The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing which I quite enjoyed. Of course the strange thing is, the game documented only one adventure of Van Helsing and the title implies plurality. Well here it is, the reveal that the second incredible adventure of Van Helsing is now being documented for our pleasure.

Already one factor makes me happy. It has been stated that it will be possible to import your Van Helsing from his first adventure to the start of the next one, giving us a good sense of continuity.

The second adventure of Van Helsing will follow on from the first after the rescuing of Borgovia from the mad scientist. The gap left between this villain has left the space open for a much darker evil. The darker side of Borgovia will be revealed and you will venture into a forbidden wilderness.

Until then, take a look at the box art:

At times Wargame: Airland Battle feels a little too much like an expansion than an actual sequel or another full game in the franchise. This is primarily due to the campaign which is a large misstep on Eugen’s part. Thankfully this initial impression isn’t completely correct. Airland Battle is Eugens tried and true method of adding a few new things in and polishing everything to a near shine.

If you’ve ever played Wargame: European Escalation then you’ll know how this works. Wargame gives you an outstanding variety of detail for each and every unit and all of them have an impact on the battle, making it essential that you pay attention to them and use your judgement. Unlike a large number of strategy games it isn’t possible to simply overwhelm enemies through sheer numbers alone. Positioning, tactics and the simple composition of your army is essential to victory. Even if you’re not up to scratch with your military tactics and you don’t know the finer details of one Main Battle Tank to the next, the details given allow you to make an informed decision.

Of course It’s not as simple as choosing the right mixture of units for destroying the enemy. Your group of T-80 tanks may be overwhelming at first but eventually they will run out of ammo and they guzzle fuel like mad. Heavy tanks aren’t exactly the most fuel efficient of vehicles, weighing over forty tonnes does require a bit of an engine to push you along. You need to be prepared to keep your supply lines open and keep your supply trucks, or choppers, moving from your Forward Operating Base to your frontline troops. But don’t forget that you’ll need to be smart exactly where you move your units, a forty tonne tank can get stuck in mud can still get a bit stuck in wet mud.

To say that Wargame is one for the military enthusiasts is an understatement to say the least. There are over eight-hundred units to select from and while there is a base deck for each faction, the units available in your combat group is represented through what is in the deck selected, the only way you’re going to get a strong force is through creating your own deck. You’ll probably find yourself spending considerably more time actually building your deck of units than the time taken using it as well due to the number of options. Then at the same time it’s very easy to find that you’ve spent up to and over half an hour building a deck that was rendered useless by a glaring weakness that you didn’t notice until you’d already lost a battle.

Where Airland Battle really gives itself a unique point is the inclusion of jets. Unlike the rest of your units, your jets aren’t featured on the field of battle until you actually send them in. They will then circle the battlefield until ordered to retreat or until their fuel levels dictate they retreat. Once off of the field of battle they are unusable until a timer has finished counting down. Honestly, I would have preferred the planes be placed in an airfield on the field of battle, giving them a bit more of a fragility to them. If you remove the enemies anti-air forces then it’s effectively game over, whereas if they can push or sneak through to the airfield even after losing their anti-air forces then it doesn’t make it an inevitability.

These new units have opened up another corridor of movement and combat that European Escalation was lacking, the air. Sure, there were choppers before but they are slower than a fighter jet and have less impact than a bomber. This means that tactical positioning and movement is even more key than before, especially the placement of anti-air and infantry units. Wargame aids with this by having a huge variety of terrain, from the forests to cover your units and hide them to the coastal grassland that can bog you down with soft mud and of course the roads that criss-cross the landscape. This links with the very rich line of sight and radar methods of knowing the field of battle but even those can be used against you. Radar can be locked on to and line of sight is a fickle thing when a group of tanks are hiding behind a nearby warehouse or forest.

All of the details, as well as the complications that come with trying to find that perfect balance, make multiplayer such an interesting experience. Everybody has to deal with the same situation and it really does move down into the requirements of technical maneuvers and, most important of all, patience. Offensive moves are going to fail the vast majority of times unless you out maneuver your enemy as you are very easy to pick off by waiting opponents while slowly trundling towards them. This means that teamwork is especially useful if you actually talk to your teammates when playing online.

This is what Wargame is all about, online. To really illustrate this a new multiplayer mode has come, a ten vs ten game which ends up being quite chaotic to say the least. Where it really improves is when you work with people and communicate, it really makes it interesting and gives you a strong chance of winning. This is one of the few games where attacking from multiple sides even with two weaker forces can change a battle due to everything from front or side armour on the vehicles actually mattering.

Another way where multiplayer really increases the interest is when you can communicate with people on your team. It makes it so you can arrange things you don’t have to worry about being a jack of all trades with your deck. Up to now I’ve created six decks, three for each side. One is just a general deck where it tries to be functional all around. Another is a support deck, artillery and anti-air. The last is a heavy strike force for the frontline, focusing on heavy tanks and infantry.

I’ve mentioned already that the single player is where Eugen have slipped up and I stand by that. There are four campaign stages that follow the conflict between NATO and the Warsaw Pact in the Scandanavia countries during World War 3. The sad thing here is that they actually start so promising and it was theirs to ruin.

Where it shines is the grander scale offered. Instead of the campaign being a sequence of set battles your battle groups are persistant enteties on a larger scale and you how and where they will fight. Your kills and deaths last, victories raise both morale and public support which enables you to bring in more groups or use more support. The support can be defensive, like blocking enemy scouting manouvers, or offensive, like using a tactical nuke. What you have at your disposal is determined by choices you make during events. Do you allow your paratrooper brigade to be sent to Korea or not? If not you may find that NATO have lost Korea and soom the Pact has more troops in Scandanavia.

As good as the positives are, the negatives while fewer are considerably overwhelming. Well, there is only one real negative and that is that the battles in the campaign are limited to twenty minutes. Twenty minutes and you have to win by gathering a number of points, no matter if you’re defending or attacking. Even if you’re winning on points when the limit is reached it still results in a draw, which damages your morale and political support.

Airland Battle like other Eugen games is polished to an excellent level. The maps, buildings, vehicles and infantry are all finely detailed, very realistic and not too flashy. At the same time the lighting, explosions and effects of the war on the land are very believable and again non too flashy. War isn’t glorified here like many other try to and it’s all the better for it.

Eugens detailed and realistic approach to strategy is always a breath of fresh air and Wargame: Airland Battle is no different. It requires planning, thinking and hard work. No amount of rushing will win you a battle and it’s impossible to not get enthralled in a twenty-person war with more armour than Pattons wet dreams.

I think we’ve all wanted a good ghost hunting game. One that fills the needs left gaping from the not-so-great appearances of the GhostBusters games. Not to put too optimistic of a spin on it, but GhostControl Inc. looks like it could be one that fits the bill.

GhostControl Inc is currently up on kickstarter with a very modest amount of £7,500. One that it has already hit a quarter of with over twenty days to go, can I see it hitting its target? Of course. Why do I think this? Well there’s no doubt that small games like this are taking off and the strategy genre, especially of this kind, was given a new breath of life in the mainstream eye with the success of Xcom.

This looks to be Ghostbusters with Xcom style gameplay. Everything shown has that Ghostbusters silliness to it and that only attracts me more. Of course when we’re in the game it can’t rely on silliness alone, there has to be some strong gameplay and hopefully in future videos they will highlight that. Up until then, take a look at the kickstarter video which is half live action, half game and all bonkers.

I’ve put a tenner down on it anyway simply because it interests me a lot and I hope you all do the same!

Edit: 12th June – Sent a question on kickstarter to them this morning about something that niggled me a bit. The currency in game is shown in dollars yet it’s set in London. Well I got a reply almost instantly and the idea is that multiple cities could be involved and a chance that each of them could have their own local currencies. A better chance that there would be one currency for them all, which makes sense to avoid conversion and all that malarkey, let’s just hope that currency is pounds!

48 games, not a bad number at all to be announced a good four or five months before the console will be released. At this rate by the end of it’s first year the PS4 will have around twenty thousands titles out for it. Here’s hoping they’ll be good!

A good fellow on Reddit called IceBreak has coolly listed down the up-to-now confirmed titles coming for the PS4. A good number of them are exclusives as well:

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Basement Crawl

Battlefield 4

Blacklight: Retribution [Free-to-Play]

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Carmageddon: Reincarnation

Cyberpunk 2077

DC Universe Online [Free-to-Play]

Daylight

Deep Down

Destiny

Diablo III

Doki-Doki Universe [Free-to-Play]

DriveClub

Dying Light

EA Sports UFC

The Evil Within

FIFA 14

Final Fantasy (Untitled)

Hohokum

inFAMOUS: Second Son

Killzone: Shadow Fall

Knack

Lords of the Fallen

Madden NFL 25

NBA 2K14

NBA Live 14

Need for Speed Rivals

The Pinball Arcade

Planetside 2 [Free-to-Play]

Primal Carnage: Genesis

Rocketbirds 2: Evolution

Shadow Warrior

Silent Enemy

Skylanders Swap Force

Sniper Elite 3

Super Motherload

Super Stardust (Untitled)

(Another Housemarque game in development)

Thief

Tiny Brains

The Walking Dead: Season 2

War Thunder: Ground Forces [Free-to-Play]

Warframe [Free-to-Play]

Watch_Dogs

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witness

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Of course when I say exclusives I mean console exclusives. Around seven of the ‘exclusives’ are also on the PC as well. But that is a strong list to say the least and depending on when the games are released we could see a console with an unusually strong launch list.

Not only that, we still have E3 to watch and Sony could shock us there and announce that they are finally making a new MediEvil after an eight year hiatus! They best do now, I loved those games. Not fussed over the PSP one though.

With this lineup and the fact that Sony aren’t going down the same death-pit laden route that Microsoft have taken, I can’t see anybody sensible not making this their first choice. Well, I say fact, all Sony need to do is reconfirm what they’ve already just as well as said. No used game DRM, no always online and the PS4 is an actual bloody games console that can do other stuff, not a multimedia box that can play games.

Citadels is the upcoming game published by bitComposer, the same guys who have publishing games like Expeditions: Conquistador (Which I will be reviewing within the next week or so) and Giana Sisters. The developers of Citadels are Games Distillery whos only previous game to date is the XBLA exclusive Aqua.

Citadels is going to be a Real Time Strategy game set during the times of King Arthur and today a number of images have been revealed. Here are all four for your viewing pleasure:

Honestly I think that if those are end-result visuals I’d be happy. The detail is brilliant and only needs a little smoothing out. There has also been a list of key features revealed:

Experience medieval England at the time of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table with detailed graphics and painstakingly designed environments – and rewrite history in the process!

Good or evil? Decide for yourself whether you will fight on the side of King Arthur or Mordred and his allies from the Northlands.

Construct impregnable fortresses and fortify them with units, moats, and spear walls. Your strategy will determine your success or failure.

A castle alone does not ensure victory! The right combination of defensive structures and units, as well as resource extraction and production are decisive for the outcome of a siege.

Fight medieval battles with an army of all kinds of units and siege weapons. When assembling your army, you will have access to archers, crossbowmen, swordsmen, mounted units, ladder carriers, catapults, trebuchets, ballistae, and siege towers.

Realistic projectile ballistics enables a tactical advantage for higher positions, and falling objects and rubble cause damage.

By fulfilling certain tasks, you can acquire legendary characters that will give you a bonus for your missions.

To be fair, the strategy genre is my favorite so I’m always a little more amicable to it than to other genres and even more so than the average person is to it. That’s why when details of a game like this, large in scope and developed by a small team relatively new to it all gets my interest even more than usual.

What has been announced is that there is a making-of feature in production by the chief developer, developer, Jürgen Reußwig, and that Citadels is expected by the end of the third quarter of 2013. So hopefully I only have another three months to wait! I’m looking forward to hearing more about Citadels.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing certain has an ambitious title, promising quite a lot. It moves away from the locale found in almost every other action-RPG and features an interesting character in Hugh Jackman. Does this make it incredible? Here’s what I think.

Okay, so you’re not playing as Hugh Jackmans Gabriel Van Helsing or even as Bram Stokers Abraham Van Helsing. You are the one and only Clarence Van Helsing, accountant extraordinaire, and you’re on a mission to uncover all of the tax-evading monsters of the world and bring them to justice. That or you’re whatever first name you pick. I was Halbarad Van Helsing, the son of Abraham. He followed in his fathers footsteps as a hunter, and hunt he did.

We start with quite a long intro describing the journey of Van Helsing and his companion, the ghostly Katarina, while they are on their way to Borgovia after being hired to save it from the clutches of a mad scientist. Where we take over is on the outskirts of Borgovia and the whole of the first act is the last leg of the trip, getting into the city itself. For the most part this was a boring experience, a trip through the same territory encountered in contemporaries like Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2. The only relief came from the comical banter between characters, specifically between Katarina and Van Helsing, and other small bits of humour spread around the world.

The dialogue is top notch from start to finish. The conversations with quest givers are well wrote and never feel forced. Too often do games feature conversations with questions and answers with no flow, feeling stiff and disjointed. While the general dialogue is good it really shines in the aforementioned humour, from Katarinas lamentations of you being generous to the beggars of Borgovia or her pointing out specific weak spots on monsters while mocking you. Other comedic moments come from references to other media found spread around, and there is a lot. There’s so much that it could have ended up feeling forced and relying too much on referential material. Thankfully it’s very good at avoiding the pitfalls that others have fallen into.

Where Van Helsing starts to come into its own is in the second act, in Borgovia, where the setting more than anything makes it stand out. Borgovia is a well designed anachronistic Eastern European area where magic and science exist side by side. There are electrical generators that power bridges, traps and mechanical soldiers and magical portals that are used to move from place to place but also can malfunction and send you to a strange otherworld called The Ink. It’s nice to not be wandering around the usual swamps, forests and small villages found in other games. Instead Borgovia is a very dark and bleak gothic city which manages to avoid looking the same and offers a nice change of scenery.

This strength in design also shows in the monsters which also represent the mixture of magic and science. The magical creatures are mostly based on Eastern European folklore, from the ghostly Rusalka and Winged Vila to Werewolves and giant Spiders. The science based creatures are usually quite grotesque, with strange prototypes that have a mans body with long fat tentacles for arms or dreadnaughts that are giant fat creatures with many means of attack. There’s a large variety of enemies you’ll meet in the world and all of them will have varied means of attacking you. However the most prominent is to simply overwhelm you, leaving you chugging health potions like it’s a drinking game.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say the combat can get pretty repetitive in some areas but to be fair that’s practically part of the job description. I’ve yet to find an action-RPG, that includes the very best like Diablo 2 and Torchlight 2, that doesn’t have moments when I want to scream because I’m fighting yet another horde of monsters that would put the would put the worlds army to shame.

Compared to others in the genre Van Helsing is pretty limited. You don’t have the option of selecting between classes because story dictates that you are a hunter. Of course you can hunt in a different ways by focusing on either melee or ranged combat, both having the normal methods and magical methods so there is a little variety. This selection is done going down certain paths in your skill tree so at least there are some decisions unlike Diablo 3′s drip-feeding of very limited abilities.

There is a little variety actually, each of the skills have three side abilities that are used through spending your rage gained in combat. There are also passive abilities that can be unlocked for the attacks. There is also more to combat than your simple attacks from passive abilities, auras, and other abilities, tricks, that can be used and then recharge. Both feature a wide variety of benefits which allow for a little tactical thinking. Not only that, there are perks that are unlocked as you develop throughout and these are then activated using reputation points. The perks are permanent once selected and have a wide variety of options and you can’t get them all, meaning some thought should go into it.

Katarina also has a skill tree which can be set around either increasing your offensive or defensive capabilities. She also has a variety of options for what she does in combat, either being a ranged or melee fighter to selecting exactly who she attacks if at all, her spectral form removes attacking but gives you an improved resistance to physical damage. Katarina also doubles as the pet from Torchlight 2 as she can also be sent to the town to stock up on potions and sell the copious amounts of loot you will obtain.

The Loot is an area that shows the variety of Van Helsing. There is the normal variety in item rarity and also the basic stats that differ, a lot being randomised for items that aren’t in a set or of legendary quality. Where more variety comes in is you can get a gypsy woman to put a random enchantment on your item, then remove it because it isn’t right and spend millions trying to get the right one and also you can use essences on items with the slots to add other specific benefits.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing has surprised me in a few ways. It has some excellent dialogue and it is genuinely funny most of the time, something a lot fail at. At the very same time it has absolutely outstanding visuals and very strong voice acting. In tune with the overall aesthetic the music is very low-key and solemn, constantly slow. The sound effects for the monsters were very fitting and the only time they were noticeable in a bad way was when facing an enemy that placed a bomb. The ticking of those bombs really grated my giblets when there were about seven down, it was never ending.

This is meant to be the first in a trilogy of games and I know that I’ll end up playing the second. After the huge letdown that was Diablo 3 last year this follows in the same vein of Torchlight 2. A very good Action-RPG on a budget price. It’s only £12/$15, an absolute bargain to say the least. Sure, it has a few downfalls and I’ve heard the multiplayer is broken at the moment, not that it interests me, but if you like Diablo, Torchlight and anything like that, this is certainly one to add to your collection.

I have always had a bit of a kindred spirit in Scrooge McDuck. Infact, I would rather him be chancellor of the exchequer than George Osborne, the mug we’ve got here in the UK now.

But unca scrooge. He’s a great guy! Sure, he’s a penny pincher but he earned those pennies and his own code means he wont steal, he’s honest and he’ll always be fair and fight against those who gain money unfairly. Not only that, even as he got older he looked after his nephews while still finding the time to go adventuring and fight villains. Best. Duck. Ever.

All this means that I’m more than happy to see the remastering of DuckTales, a game I last played when I was about 5 after finding an original gameboy copy of it. Ducktales remastered is said to be hitting the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U later this summer.

I, for one, am looking forward to it – a blast from the past – playing as Unca Scrooge on one of his adventures, gathering millions and millions of dollars and just having some fun.

Until then, watch the trailer and sing along!
